Welcome to our Rustic and Bohemian Inspired Living Room! When Daron and I found out that we were moving to Cincinnati and buying our first home together, we knew that we wanted to try and combine both of our styles and really make our home “our own” and make every room feel warm and welcoming.
I’ve shared shopping details for all of the Rustic and Bohemian Inspired Products and Finds in our Living Room at the bottom of this post.
My style is more Eclectic and Bohemian while Daron’s style is more rustic and modern farmhouse so we knew going into our remodel project that it was going to be challenging to bring all of our ideas together not to mention that we were combining our different styles, in a very traditional designed house.
Before and After
Here is the before picture of our living room and you can see that we did a complete update to the room, completely changing the wall colors, painting the ceiling, and adding a light fixture. We did keep the original hardwood floors and we kept the bookshelf as is on the right side of the fireplace but we chose to remove the TV mount on the left side and leave it as an open space for pictures. Our goal was to update the traditional look and feel of the living room space and make it more rustic and bohemian inspired.
I love color. I mean I love color, but Daron is more of a fan of neutral colors so we agreed that we would work to find balance between his love of neutrals and my love of color.
For our living room we chose a light gray wall color called Repose Gray from Sherwin Williams and it ended up being our favorite paint color. We painted all of the trim and the ceiling a bright white color to bring contrast to the wood beams. The exposed wood beams were a huge selling point to the house.
I originally saw a similar rustic light fixture to the one that we chose on Pinterest and I knew that I had to find this rustic light fixture as the focal point for the living room, however I didn’t want to pay a ton of money for it. I was excited to find it on Overstock for a really good price and we just changed out all of the bulbs.
Daron and I combined all of the furniture that we both had accumulated in our previous homes and it worked out that we had neutral color furniture like the gray couch and leather chair that we used for the room. We didn’t have a big space to work with so we kept the furniture simple with and purchased an additional leather chair and wood coffee table.
Rugs and Accent Pillows
I knew that I wanted to add texture and color to the hard wood floors so I decided to by layer a Natural Jute Rug with a Cowhide Rug under the coffee table.
I love decorative pillows and I think they are a great place to add pops of color and play with different textures like the big center cream pillow on the couch which is a one of my favorites. For our Living Room, I picked up and ordered an assortment of eclectic pillows from Homegoods and Overstock. My tip for purchasing decorative pillows it to not be afraid to mix and match colors and sizes.
Wall Coverings and Accessories
Normally, I wouldn’t have agreed to showcase so many of Daron’s hunting trophies on our living room wall but he somehow tricked me before we moved into the house…he offered to let me pick out whatever light fixtures I wanted for the house (no limit on sparkly crystals), if in exchange, I agreed to let him hang a few of his favorite hunting items. Let’s just say when the moving truck arrived from Texas with several hunting trophies (more than 8), I wanted to call back the deal, haha! But, I’ve done my best to try and make it work.
I decided to create a bohemian inspired feature wall using an assortment of pictures, some of which I had, and other that I found online and at discount stores. One thing about me is that I have quirky obsession with Llamas, yes Llamas and I’m not sure why but the Llama print that is on our living room wall was actually the first print that I found and I used it to pull some of the other colors into the room.
I don’t ever think you can have too many baskets, pillows, and throws and I’m always on the lookout for deals online. You can see that I added a printed basket with different patterned throws to our fireplace mantle and a basket above the shelves and next to one of the leather chairs.
To style the bookshelf in the living room, I started with all of the old hardback books that I could find and I removed the outside paper so that I have a solid color book. I then look for different objects and figurines that I can use as bookends and for display and finally, I added a few picture frames.
Our Rustic and Bohemian Inspired Living Room turned out to be one of our favorite rooms in the house. It’s positioned right off the kitchen and we love watching TV and hanging out in the space.
